When the Soul Whispers: Purposeful Pausing for Healing, Hope, and Becoming

Since my early adulthood, I’ve been drawn to the study of higher consciousness.

Influenced by the writings of Abraham Maslow, the early work of Carl Jung, and others, I spent two formative weeks at the Esalen Institute at ages 19 and 20. After earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology, I completed a master’s in humanistic psychology and a doctorate in transpersonal psychology.

Maslow’s The Farther Reaches of Human Nature—published posthumously and completed by his wife and colleagues—shaped much of my thinking about human potential.

Across 15 years as a psychologist and 35 years as a life and leadership coach, I’ve learned to trust the quiet guidance of the inner voice. Recently I’ve written essays on this theme—when the soul whispers—as another way of naming that inner knowing.

I’ve created an 8 week course for people ready to listen to their own wisdom and to practice purposeful pausing. It’s an engaging, experiential space for learning, sharing, and renewal.

8 Week course begins May 20 at 11 am EASTERN time and meets every Wednesday ending on July 8. Each session will last 60 minutes. I think this time is best all around the world except for maybe just a few countries.

When the Soul Whispers: Purposeful Pausing for Healing, Hope, and Becoming

A Poetic Guide

“During the troubling uncertainties of our times, Patrick Williams offers a practical and eloquent guide to unfolding—drawing on his acclaimed and deeply seasoned life as a teacher, coach, therapist, and healer. For anyone on the journey toward wholeness, his invitation to inner work is comforting, wise, and profoundly needed.

When Carl Jung was once asked, after the testing of the hydrogen bomb, whether there was still hope for the world, he replied: There is—if enough people do their work, their inner work. Pat’s work leads us toward that place with clarity, compassion, and understanding.”

An Experience of Sacred Pausing

Dr. Pat Williams’ poetic guide to his course, When the Soul Whispers, offers an experience of sacred pausing that leads us away from the demands of Chronos, into stillness and silence. In that time beyond time —Kairos— we enter the spiral of renewal, hands open to grace as we let go of the need to perform, achieve, and prove ourselves. Here, we “cocoon on purpose,” hibernating from stress, anxiety, and constant motion, embracing the solitude so essential for inner work and transformation. We rest so we can become; we winter to welcome the spring. The invitation is gentle. It comes as a gift from one who has built achievement upon achievement, receiving award upon award, contributing nationally and globally —and who is now in a different season of life, ready to share his wisdom with those longing for “respite, for reimagining, for quiet re-emergence.” Thank you, Pat, for beckoning us into spiral living!

Something Really Beautiful and Meaningful

Thanks so much for sharing your writing with me. I read When the Soul Whispers really appreciated the heart you put into the essay. There’s clearly a deep compassion and tenderness for the reader and human experience, and the tone is thoughtful, spacious, and supportive throughout.

There’s a lot to appreciate in what you wrote. I, of course, enjoyed your metaphorical language. The spiral, cocoon, and river metaphors are strong anchors, and the way you move between reflection, ritual, and somatic practice gives people not just something to think about, but something to do with what they’re feeling. It feels comforting, especially for those navigating uncertainty and change. Of which we seem to be generating more of as a species, rather than less of. I do hope we can evolve.

Overall, I think you’ve created something really beautiful and meaningful. I think it invites people to slow down and be honest and curious with themselves.

Nicely done..

Warmly,
— Lyssa DeHart

Invitation to be Calm in Vulnerability

I have been feeling broken over and over again in the last 4-5 years. Life has been hard and filled with losses and challenges of the heart. Your words touched me. They invited me to think differently about my sorrow and my need to hide.

I love the way you wrote and phrase your ideas. This is a wonderful invitation to be calm in vulnerability.

Offers the experience of sitting beside a wise, compassionate presence

Patrick, I loved these essays!

When the Soul Whispers and Embracing the Stillness of Silence offer the experience of sitting beside a wise, compassionate presence, one that does not rush healing or demand answers. These essays extend a gentle permission to slow down, to cocoon, and to rest without explanation, honoring the inward seasons of life. The writing is spacious, unhurried, and deeply soul-honoring; nothing is forced or prescribed, and each reflection invites the reader to breathe, linger, and listen inward, allowing something essential to soften and heal.

May I share it with others, such as my son who is a PhD in psychology and someone I know who is recovering from a concussion, and a fellow coach.

Thank you so much for sharing your essays with me. I truly believe a book and workshop are needed in this world!

Warm Regards,
