About Dr. Pat Williams

Author & Personal Development Coach

Dr. Pat Williams is an accomplished author and personal development coach who is considered one of the early pioneers of coaching. With a career spanning over three decades, Pat has made significant contributions to the field of coaching and has helped shape it into a respected profession.

Pat holds a Master Certified Coach (International Coach Federation) and a Board Certified Coach (Center for Credentialing and Education) credentials. He started his executive coaching career in 1990 with Hewlett Packard, IBM, Kodak, and other companies along the front range of Colorado. In addition to coaching, Pat is a licensed psychologist since 1980.

Pat’s educational background is impressive, as he is a member of PHI BETA KAPPA and a CUM LAUDE graduate of Kansas University in 1972. He completed his masters in Humanistic Psychology in 1975 from the University of West Georgia and earned his doctorate in Transpersonal Psychology in 1977 from the University of Northern Colorado. His dissertation focused on Transpersonal Psychology and the Evolution of Consciousness.

Pat’s passion for coaching led him to join Coach U in 1996, and six months later, he closed his 16-year therapy practice to become a full-time coach. He was a senior trainer with Coach U from 1997-1998 before starting his coach training school, the Institute for Life Coach Training (ILCT), which specializes in training those with a human services orientation. Since 1998, ILCT has trained thousands of individuals worldwide.


Renowned Coach Trainer

Pat has taught graduate coaching classes at various universities, including Colorado State University, Denver University, Fielding University, and Loyola University, among others. He was also a curriculum consultant for the Coaching Certificate program at Fielding International University. Pat has authored numerous articles and has co-authored several books, including Becoming a Professional Life Coach: The Art and Science of a Whole-Person Approach (3rd ed. 2023), Therapist as Life Coach: Transforming Your Practice (2nd Edition 2007), Total Life Coaching: 50+ Life Lessons, Skills, and Techniques to Enhance Your Practice and Your Life (2005), and The Law and Ethics in Coaching: How to Solve and Avoid Difficult Problems in Your Practice (2006). He is also a contributor to The Philosophy and Practice of Coaching (Chapter 1, 2008).

Pat’s contributions to the coaching profession are numerous, and he has served on the boards of several prestigious organizations, including the International Coach Federation (ICF), where he was a past board member and co-chaired the ICF regulatory committee. He is also a past president of ACTO, the Association of Coach Training Organizations, and an honorary VP of the Association of Coaching Psychology. Additionally, Pat is a founding member of Harvard University’s Institute of Coaching and was honored in 2018 as an inaugural member of the International Coaching Federation’s Circle of Distinction.
